Available records show that J H Allen was a photographer from 1885 to 1918. He worked in Russell, KS, from about 1885 to about 1912. There is also some evidence that he worked in smaller towns near Russell, KS, for short periods during this time. He worked in Oakley, KS from 1912 to October of 1918. It is not clear if he continued with the photograph gallery after that.

It is quite possible that the Cabinet Card at the top is a copy of an earlier photograph. The detail is very soft. It is quite faded and damaged however, making assessment difficult.
