T J Echols appears to have spent nearly all his professional life in Little Rock, AR, from about 1888 to 1914. There was a short stay in Monroe, LA, in 1914 and he died in Illinois in 1918. He had at least 8 different studio locations in Little Rock, the longest stay being 301 ½ Main from 1902 to 1908.

He had branch studios in other cities in Arkansas and as far away as England as one news item shows.

When T J Echols actually had a branch studio in Conway, AR, is not known for sure. Perhaps it was in 1891 when a news item proclaims that he has “returned” to Little Rock.

But it could have been any time. Photographers were known to have temporary studios in small towns around where they lived.

Samuel Archibald Ralston
(16 Dec 1858 - 15 Sep 1944)

Very little was found about S A Ralston except the mentions on this page. He appears to have been in the photography business with Butterfield just about a year, in Sioux Falls, SD. After that he went into the pharmacy business in Iowa and never returned to photography or South Dakota.

The cabinet card at the left must have been finished when Ralston was not a partner in the gallery. Considering the style of the card it was probably done after January of 1891 when the partnership disolved and before 1896 when Butterfield retired.

One mention of a W F Kedney, cabinet card photographer, was found in the David V. Tinder cabinet card collection, University of Michigan. This account says that the photographer’s actual name was William F Kidney, not Kedney, although “’W. F. Kedney, Sturgis, Mich.” was the actual printing on some cabinet mounts.’“

Whichever is correct, the name variation was held consistent by associated names, dates and places.

The Belleville (KS) Telegram carries several items about Dr Brown and Mrs R M Brown documenting their stay in that town in 1897 to 1899.

One item, 17 Sep 1897, mentions Dr and Mrs Brown and daughter proposing to locate in Belleville, KS, from Alma, NE.

On 02 Jun 1899, there appears a short item in the Belleville (KS) Telegram which seems to indicate that Jun 23 and 24 will be customer’s last chance to pick up their orders.

Unfortunately nothing has been found so far that documents their travels before or after their stay in Belleville, KS.

Further leads have been inconclusive owing to the fact that there were at least three doctors named Brown in the area. Though there are mentions in area newspapers of the activities of Dr Brown, there is nothing to indicate that it is the same Dr Brown that resided in Belleville, KS, in 1897 to 1899.

It is also unclear whether the initials "R M" belong to Mrs Brown or her husband. Some ads end with “Mrs R M Brown” and others with “R M Brown”

It is fairly conclusive however that the cabinet card here was finished between Oct of 1897 and June of 1899.

A page by page search of the 1899 Washington DC city directory didn’t find photographer Hewke. But a small ad in The Washington (DC) Times shows that although he apparently missed the printing deadline for the annual city directory, he had established an address by September 1899. The cabinet card shown here must have been finished between September 1899 and 1906.

Joseph Jennings dies in San Diego, CA

Belleville (KS) Telescope item tells of the death of Joseph Jennings in San Diego, CA

Joseph Jennings spent most of his career in Scandia, Republic County, Kansas. In all documents between 1895 and 1925 he is listed as photographer. He had a brief stay in Hubbard, OR, in 1892 when daughter Margaret was born. The 1900 US census places him in Albion, KS. All other documents list him in Scandia, KS. He is in fact, in the 1910 US census twice, both in Scandia, KS.

Between 1884 and 1930 news items show that he also had studios in Belleville, Narka and Courtland, KS, all within a 30 mile radius, all connected by a rail line. There are many small towns in the area which might have had a temporary Jennings studio at one time.

The studios mentioned in the newspaper items could have existed for years or perhaps just weeks.

A cabinet card imprinted with the Jennings studio name could have been made any time between 1895 and about 1930 when he appears to retire.
