There are many examples of the cabinet card work from Jackson
Galleries. Which of the family is the actual photographer is not
always clear. And they didn’t always include an address with their
imprint on the cabinet cards, This makes it difficult to date a card
          by location or photographer.

The timeline here will represent events and documents from all three
of them. This will perhaps help establish dates on some of the Jackson
          Gallery work.

There are many Jackson cabinet card examples available. On this page
are examples that show a variety of card designs. Also included here
are some that give an approximate date.

Jackson JR appears to identify himself on some imprints but many
cards are imprinted just "W D Jackson" or even just "Jackson" which
could mean any of the three photographers.

Additionally, the studio location is not always in the imprint which
also makes identification and dating difficult.

Not the one you were looking for? Here's the photographer's

            INDEX by name.
All the Cabinet Card photographers of the 19th
century found in LOST GALLERY are listed there.

Cabinet cards typically have the photographer’s name and address printed on the bottom edge or the reverse of the card. 19th century photographers moved around a lot. The basic idea here is to find WHEN a photographer was WHERE, which will help date an unidentified CABINET CARD from your family album.

This is a work always in progress.
Aditional information and New examples are always welcome. Any
additional information will help narrow the time that these precious
          antiques were made.

All submissions should be free of glare and
          shadows.
 Do not crop.
Leave a border around each card. The edges are
sometimes an important clue to the age of the card.

I have quite a few cabinet cards that have "Jackson", "WD Jackson", and "WD Jackson Jr" on them. I have one card that has "Mrs. CE Jackson". One of the cards actually has the date 1893 on the back so I feel most of the photos were taken around that date. I know that they must be relatives of the Wedemeyer family but have no idea who the people are in the photos. Is there any way to identify names from any old records that might exist?....Thank you, Glenna Speed
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment. That question comes up a lot. When a photographer retired or died, the records and stock and equipment were often sold or given to another local photographer still in business. Of course many such records have been lost in fires and other natural disasters. If any records still exist for a photographer of that era, they would most likely be preserved by a local or state historical society or museum.
DeleteLook for similarities in the photographs themselves. Identical imprints, props and backdrops might indicate the photographs were taken around the same time, even the same day. The mounting card stock was often purchased in large lots. A straight-edged card with rounded corners would be a different batch than the deckled edge or gilt edge cards.
Sorry I can’t be more help.
