William Henry Boardman

William H Boardman
(1869-1943)

Looking at the records, from about 1900 until his death in 1943, William Henry Boardman was often listed as a photographer, his residence and studio at 1060 South Avenue, Rochester, NY.

He was not, however, a photographer during that time. He was a photo-finisher, a term probably unfamiliar in those days.

The records are rather thin before that. One Ithaca, NY, city directory record does place him firmly as photographer in Trumansburg, NY, in 1890. That lasted perhaps until about 1897. He may have worked in other small towns in the area also.

He seems to have tried other employments around the turn of the century, 1900. Between 1898 and 1903 he worked with Eastman Kodak, Mohawk Camera Company and he may also have worked as photographer for other studios. But, after that he works at 1060 South Avenue for the next 40 years as a photo finisher.

There were at least two other photographers named Boardman in upper New York state about the same time. There was George Boardman and B D Boardman of Seneca Falls, NY. (See example below) So far nothing has been found to place either of these Boardman’s in Ithaca, NY or connect either of them with William Herbert Boardman of Rochester, NY.

The cabinet card shown here was likely done in that early time around 1897 when William H Boardman was in Ithaca, NY, working as a photographer.

Elmer Buck seems to quit photography completely in 1915 and move to Washington state.

Although there is almost a year by year accounting of the locations of E E Buck, there is no mention of being partners with John J Fritz. The only hint is the Buck residence in 1912, at 309 Nicolette av which is a few blocks from Nicolette Island. Nicolette Island is in the Mississippi River which runs between Minnesota and Wisconsin at Minneapolis. But that is when John Fritz is engaged in business with his brother Frank X Fritz. Still, keeping the studio in St. Cloud,Fritz could have partnered with E E Buck for a short term in 1912. It’s possible; it’s speculation.

The only sure conclusion is that the partnership of Buck and Fritz was a short one.

James David Huffman

Photographer:
J. D. Huffman
Tupelo, Miss

James David Huffman
(12 Jan 1841 - 15 Aug 1925)

J D Huffman was in the photography business in Tupelo, MS, from the 1900 US census to the 1920 US census. The family has not been found in the 1880 US census. There are no city directories so it is not possible to find studio addresses which usually helps date cabinet cards accurately.

Two of his sons, Claude and Walter carried on the photography business also.

There was also a J D Huffman as photographer from 1907 to 1925 in New Albany, IN, but no connection has been made to the one in Mississippi.

John H Windisch

Photographer: Windisch
Oak Harbor, Ohio

Though John H. Windisch, the photographer, was found in data mostly in Toledo, it is not hard to imagine he worked the small towns within 20 miles of Toledo. Oak Harbor, OH, just 23 miles from Toledo, could be one of them. Oak Harbor is on a rail line directly from Toledo, OH.

And it could be work done just before he moved into Toledo, OH, but no records have been found to support that.

There was another person by the name of John Windisch in Ohio, about the same age, so his location in the early years is a bit uncertain. The years after 1900 tie together with occupations and addresses.

Jodi Ann Walker (wife of Edgar Louis Goben)
(1868 - 1942)

Imprint on mounting card; Mrs J A Goben, Ohio Avenue, Wichita Falls, TX

Jodie Ann Walker was the first of three wives of Edgar L Goben. Goben and Jodi Walker were married for only a few years. Married in 1889, by the 1900 US census, Jodi is listed as divorced.

Although during her lifetime, found in over 40 documents, census and city directory, she is never credited as a photographer. Then, finally, on her death certificate, she is shown as “retired photographer”. It would seem, although the example photograph here is dated 1902 on the reverse, Jodi Goben might have carried on in the photographic business as a second occupation while operating boarding houses or rooming houses until about her 70’s.
