Thanks to a nearly complete set of Denver, CO, city directories a good look at the photographic career of George W McDonald is available. That's quite an accomplishment considering the name "G W McDonald" was not uncommon in that area.

The years between 1882 and 1890 are still a mystery but these would be the years that the McDonald family was moving from Collingwood, Ontario to Denver, Co. At that time, Photographer George McDonald would have been in his 20’s.

Harlan, Iowa is in the vicinity of Omaha, NE. The photographer J W Jones has not been found.

The 1910 census lists a Justin W Jonas as photographer and boarding in Oxford, IA. This is a couple hundred miles from Harlan, IA. It is only a remote possibility that it is the J W Jones, photographer for this cabinet card.

Very little has been found about a J F Hurr of Odessa, Missouri. The 1880 US census lists a John HERR, as photographer, living in Lafayette, Missouri, just about 3 miles from Odessa, Missouri, but the trail begins and ends there. No additional information has been found.

Scant information and lack of examples usually means a very short career in photography.

Grand Forks, ND, state death certificate, Albert P Holand, retired photographer, dies at age 64

Shortly after his immigration from Norway to the US, A P Holand was connected with photographer A P Overland, in Fergus Falls, ND. The firm of Overland and Holand advertises heavily in a Danish language newspaper beginning August 1886 through June 1889 when the advertisements abruptly stop.

The last news item says that Holand has gone to Montana. Note that Montana was where Holand’s citizenship was naturalized in 1889. This is shortly before Albert Holand begins appearing in the Grand Forks, ND, city directories.

Albert P Holand didn’t move around much during his career compared to some other photographers of the era. From 1892 to 1900 he lived and worked at 222 S Third. From 1903 to 1909 he worked at 222 S Third and lived at 712 S Third.

From 1910 on, there is no gallery listed for him so he apparently is working as photographer for a gallery owned by someone else. He retires about 1923 and his death certificate in 1927 lists him as “retired photographer”.

From small notices in the newspaper, Grand Forks Herald, Holand appears to have accumulated some rental property and probably lived on the income from that.

He pays all expenses against the old company and calls in what the company left outstanding. Mr. Holland has gone to Montana.

There are some sizable gaps in this timeline of photographer Louis P Greenlund so the years and locations of his photography business are not very clear.

It can be said however that he was cefinately in business in Warren, PA, from 1890 to 1898 and perhaps a bit after. And from 1903 to 1905 he was working in Cleveland, OH, but it is not clear if he had his own gallery or was simply working as photographer for another gallery. The rest of the time it is not clear if he was still in the photography business or not. He relocated his family but it is unknown if he relocated the studio also. More research pending.
