George W Day

Photographer: Geo. W Day
Norristown and
Phoenixvillw, PA

It appears there were five photographers named George Day in the cabinet card era. And three of them were George W. Day. While following the life of the photographer George W Day, many other men by that name were found living nearby. In Philadelphia alone there was a secretary, a laborer, a bookkeeper, a carpenter, a tailor and a roofer, all named George W Day, at the same time as photographer Day.

G W Day and family might possibly have moved to a rural residence as a small news item suggests. And perhaps not as it is a city address on his death certificate
1925
Philadelphia, PA death certificate George W Day dies of chronic myocarditis at age 72; address is 1203 Overington

It should be mentioned that there was also a George W Day, photographer, in Hoboken, NJ, working at 628 Washington between 1895 and 1898. This is a different photographer. There was also a photographer named George W Day in Brooklyn, NY in 1890 and 1891. These two records may be the same person but there is no indication that Pennsylvania George W Day was ever in Hoboken, NJ, or Brooklyn, NY. It looks as if it was two possibly three, separate photographers.

This cabinet card must have been finished in that period after George W Day’s partnership ended with John L Cope in 1886, and before leaving Norristown, PA, about 1900. The weight and simple printing of the card suggests the earlier part of that period.

The Philadelphia Inquirer - 04 Jun 1899

The Harrisburg (PA)Telegraph - 05 Mar 1925

Yes, possibly the above clipping refers to a completely different George W Day. Philadelphia photographer Day had a son named Frank and the family seems to disappear from Philadelphia, PA, the same year. So, it's possible this is the same family.

Not the one you were looking for? Here's the photographer's INDEX by name. All the Cabinet Card photographers of the 19th century found in LOST GALLERY are listed there.

Cabinet cards typically have the photographer’s name and address printed on the bottom edge or the reverse of the card. 19th century photographers moved around a lot. The basic idea here is to find WHEN a photographer was WHERE, which will help date an unidentified CABINET CARD from your family album.

This is a work always in progress.

Aditional information and New examples are always welcome. Any additional information will help narrow the time that these precious antiques were made.

All submissions should be free of glare and shadows.
Do not crop.
Leave a border around each card. The edges are sometimes an important clue to the age of the card.

B C Kinney

All avenues of research known to
LOST GALLERY
have been exhausted in efforts to find anything on photographer B. C. Kinney.

The rubber stamp identification on the reverse reading "B. C. Kinney, Photographer"(or perhaos B G Kinney) might suggest that Kinney was in the photograph business only a short time. The name did not turn up a photographer in any state records or newspapers.

Towles Studio

Towles Studios
65 1/2 Centre St.
Cumberland
Frostburg and Lonaconing, Md.

reverse of the card at the left

William Henry Towles (1871 - 1954)
Clarence Oscher Towles (1866 - 1937)

W H Towles and brother C O Towles appear to have been major players in their time, winning awards and serving as officers in photographer associations. One account mentions that William H owned all of the equipment used by Mathew Brady who died in 1896

W H Towles seems the more active of the two. Towles Studio was in three maybe four cities around the turn of the 19th century. A studio might have been managed by one or the other, both or neither. But “Towles Studio” is what will be printed on the card in most examples, without regard as to who was the actual photographer. Some cards might include the particular town name but most seem more generic by listing all the studios at the time such as: “Cumberland, Frostberg and Lonaconing, MD” as in the example here.

In the list below, the brother who was at the studio is included where it is documented. Note that even if neither of the brothers were present, the studio might have been managed by someone else and the cabinet card logo would still look the same.

Typical City Directory ad circa 1899

William H continues as a photographer most of his life from about 1891 to his death in 1954. Clarence starts at about 1891 but in 1901 he also begins working in the photographic supply business. Then in 1916 he quits the studio to travel for a photographic supply company. He dies in 1937

The cabinet card shown above was probably finished around 1895 to 1897.

William Henry Adams

William Henry Adams

Only three city directories available. They show only one address change

1866 Dec 23

1916
Greenville, TX, city directory as photographer at 2814 ½ Lee
1936 Jun 25
Greenville, TX, W H Adams dies at age 69 of coronary occlusion

William Henry Adams moved to Greenville, TX, 01 Aug 1893 and worked as a photographer until he died in 1936. No records were found to show he was a photographer before that time but perhaps he worked for another studio.

The photographer's name is embossed in the center at the bottom and is barely legible here. Unfortunately there is no studio address on the cabinet card here so the date cannot be narrowed further. The style of the card would suggest sometime between 1890 and 1900 but some blank card stock may have lasted a decade later.

He was also quite active in city and county politics.
