The cabinet card at the top of this page is imprinted “Rich’s New Gallery” at “99 Main street” but no documentation has been found placing the studio at that address. Researching the 99 Main address, newspaper ads indicate that it was a shoe or clothing store between 1853 and 1886. Perhaps the “New” gallery was between 1890, the last mention of the gallery at 101 Main and 1892 when he died. 99 Main would be NEXT DOOR to 101 Main. More ads show that Blankenbuhler Novelties was occupying that address in 1895 and Muntz Photo Studio 1896.

So it’s only a guess but this cabinet card was possibly done between 1890 and 1892. Judging by the style of the card, and its rather sloppy assembly, it could be much earlier, around 1870.

J H Abbott began his professional career as a printer and operating the Muskingum Printing Co. He then opened a business called the “Elite Gallery” and published the “Sunday Morning Star”.

Documents show that from 1893 through 1896, he called his business “Zanesville Art Company”.

Abbott moves to Harvey, IL, about 1901 and goes back into the printing business. He never returns to photography.

Harry B Hansbury

There are two photographers from the cabinet card era, named Hansbury: Harry B Hansbury of Philadelphia, PA, and his son Edward B Hansbury of New York, NY.

Very little has been found about Edward Hansbury in connection to photography. He is shown as photographer in the New York City city directories of 1910, 1911 and 1916. All other references to the name seem unassociated with the photographer in profession, location and relatives. He seems to have turned to real estate and other sales. He died in 1947.

Harry B Hansbury of Philadelphia, PA, was a photographer from about 1875 to 1913, documented well by the US census and city directories from several years.

Since the cabinet card shown at the top of this page shows only the imprint “Hansbury” with no location or other information, it could be from either photographer. It is only speculation here, but it was probably done by Harry B Hansbury.

Harry B Hansbury began his photography career around 1875 working for other photographers in Philadelphia, PA, such as Oliver B DeMorat who had a studio at 914 Chestnut. About 1892 Hansbury took over the management of the DeMorat studio at 914 Chestnut. Around 1900 - 1902 the DeMorat studio name changed to Hansbury Studio and remained at 914 Chestnut until H B Hansbury committed suicide in 1913.

Cabinet cards imprinted as shown on this page were probably done after the studio name change between about 1903 and 1913.

A comedy of errors? Yes. But below is probably William B Praytor in the 1870 and 1880 US census. This is a good guess as William Bluford Praytor has been found no where else in 1870.

Praytor moved around a lot but seems never to have left Texas. Still, no documentation has been found showing when he was actually in Round Rock, TX. Available records show him in Mount Pleasant, TX, most of his life from 1900 on. Mount Pleasant, TX, is not close to Round Rock, TX.

So far, no documentation has been found connecting Praytor to Bror Gustaf Grondal but they were possibly working together between about 1887 and 1891 before Grondal moved his family from Red Rock, TX, to Lindsborg, KS. Most likely, they worked together around the first part of 1890.

The basic idea here is to find WHEN a photographer was WHERE, which will help date an unidentified CABINET CARD from your family album.
