Holland

Charles E Holland (1869-1949)
Henry Fisk Holland (1862 -)
Sadie M Holland (1881- )
Thomas Holland (1848-1908)
William A Holland Sr (1814-1901)
William A Holland Jr (1845 - 1930)

Brothers Charles, Henry, Thomas and William were all photographers in and around Boston between about 1892 and 1901.

Charles E Holland began in photography with his father William A Sr 1892 through 1895. It appears that he became a leader in a religious cult for most of the rest of his life.

In 1886 Henry F entered into partnership with George P Roberts forming Holland and Roberts photography at 10 Temple Place, in Boston. The partnership does not last long. By 1889, Holland is running the studio alone, assisted by his brother Thomas. In March of 1890, Henry files for bankruptcy and the studio at 10 Temple Place is closed. Henry goes into the electric business and does not return to photography. Any cabinet cards imprinted “Holland and Roberts” would be from about 1886 and 1887. If they are imprinted just “Holland” then they would be from about 1888 to 1990.

Thomas Holland continues on in photography with his father, William A Sr, in a studio at 611 Washington until about 1896. He then moves to Wakefield, MA, but continues to work at 611 Washington in Boston that year. By 1898 the studio at 611 Washington in Boston has closed and he has a studio in Wakefield, MA, on Main at the corner of Crystal and Montrose. His home address is 257 Albion.

Sadie (in some records, Sarah) M Holland, daughter of Thomas, was also listed as photographer in records from 1900. By 1910 she is working in a cotton mill.

William A Holland Sr, after working with son Thomas at 611 Washington, works for other studios until 1900. The 1900 US census shows he is working as a frame maker. He dies in 1901

William A Holland Jr apparently never married and followed several professions in his lifetime, from bell boy to frame maker. No records exactly place him as photographer but it is not hard to imagine working in one of the studios with his brothers and father at least for a short time. He often lived at the same address as his father in later years.

There is a nice biography on Henry F Holland at
Broadway Photographers

Not the one you were looking for? Here's the photographer's INDEX by name. All the Cabinet Card photographers of the 19th century found in LOST GALLERY are listed there.

Cabinet cards typically have the photographer’s name and address printed on the bottom edge or the reverse of the card. 19th century photographers moved around a lot. The basic idea here is to find WHEN a photographer was WHERE, which will help date an unidentified CABINET CARD from your family album.

This is a work always in progress.

Aditional information and New examples are always welcome. Any additional information will help narrow the time that these precious antiques were made.

1899 Aug 08
Ottawa (ON) Journal news item about death of Charles W Parker
Charles W Parker’s biography is pretty thin. It doesn’t help that he apparently had a brother named C W Parker. There was also a tug boat and a fishing boat by that name.

It appears fairly certain that Charles W Parker was a photographer at 140 Sparks st in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, from 1891 to 1898.

And before that a Charles Parker was apparently a photographer in Bay City, MI, 1869 to 1890 but it cannot be confirmed that it is the same as the Parker in Ottawa. Maybe it was his brother. It has not been established yet what profession his brother followed. If it was also photography, then some of the locations could be one or the other or both. Many documents just list C W Parker.

Some news items seem to conflict with other information sources. The newspapers indicate that Charles W Parker closed his Ottawa gallery and moved to Toronto. Further news stories tell of his expedition to the Klondike with his brother C W Parker, contracting scurvy, returning to his Toronto home and dying in August of 1899.

The Toronto city directories do not support this. There are two Charles W Parker’s listed from 1896 through 1900, as clerks, one for a drug company and the other for the GTR railroad. Are these the two brothers or two entirely different Parkers?

Also, between 1882 and 1901 city directories show a Charles Parker as photographer in New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Washington D C as well as Ottawa. They are not all the same person.

The only positive location for photographer C W Parker is 140 Sparks st in Ottawa, ON. He was apparently there from 1891 through 1896. Other locations cannot be confirmed.

W H Hodges can be documented as being a photographer between 1888 and 1900. He traveled a lot so his visit to Skowhegan, ME, to finish this cabinet card could have been at any time between those dates. He appears to have left the photography business by 1910.

The “McIntosh Studio” of Skowhegan, Me, belonged to George F McIntosh and appears to be his home studio from 1880 on. In addition to the Skowhegan location, McIntosh had studios in August, ME, Gardiner, ME, and Kennebec, ME, between 1907 and 1923. He died in 1931. He either rented out his studio to itinerant photographers or perhaps allowed them to add their own name to the cabinet cards while working for or with him.

William Burr McIntosh at Wikipedia,
a writer, publisher, actor and photographer. In all likelihood he is not the McIntosh that employed L H Hodges, above.

Records for Plattsburgh NY are uncharacteristically scant. No city directories are available and only two US census accounts were found 1880 and 1900. There was an accounting for W. A. Bigelow in “Bigelow Society” found in a Google search.
A small bio called “The Souvenir Industrial Edition of Plattsburgh 1897, page 100" was also found on Ancestry.com.

At International Center of Photography there is a small tintype credited to Bigelow.
