John Wesley Kratzer

John Wesley Kratzer - Charles E Kratzer - Lemuel E Kratzer

photographer: Kratzer
East Main St.
Hillsboro, O.

John Wesley Kratzer (1841 - 1897)
Lemuel Ellsworth Kratzer (1863 - 1937)
Charles E. Kratzer (1865 - 1828)

Lemuel Kratzer and his brother Charles E. were responsible for most of the cabinet cards imprinted “Kratzer” and done in small towns around Cincinnati, OH, between 1890 and 1928.

Their father John Wesley Kratzer, age 40, only in the 1880 census is listed as a Photo Artist. In all other documents found, he was a farmer or a truck driver.

The brothers appear to have worked other small towns in the area including, Hillsboro, Oxford, Blanchester, New Vienna, Mount Orab, and Upper Sandusky. Deciding which went where is a little speculative, but Lemuel appears to have stayed closer to Lebanon, OH, while Charles went to Upper Sandusky and New Vienna.

Another family tree on Ancestry promotes a James William Kratzer as photographer in Mount Orab, Brown County, OH, but no documents have been found to support this.

Here is a combined timeline assembling all the documents found for all three men. Personal information such as marriages and births, is included to help place establish locations of these photographers.

Orville M Remington

Photographer:
Coleman & Remington
Hoppin Homestead Building
Providence R. I.

Orville M. Remington (1839 - 1894) is shown as Photographer in City Directories from 1850 through 1882, when he became a newspaper editor and a short service as an insurance salesman for Aetna Life.

Around 1863 he had a short service in the Civil War reaching the rank of Second Sergeant apparently never leaving his home of Providence, Rhode Island.

There could be photographs credited to Remington as early as 1850 and up to 1868 when he joined with W. W. Coleman. City Directory entries indicate he and Coleman were apparently partners from 1868 to 1883.

After 1883 Remington apparently gave up the photography business.

William W Coleman

Photographer:
Coleman & Remington
Hoppin Homestead Building
Providence R. I.

William W. Coleman (1830-1908)

There are many examples of the work by this partnership to be found on genealogy and sales sites.

Another example found, gives the address as 25 Westminster Street, Providence.

In a paragraph discussing the origin of the pictures used in the book “Works of Edgar Allen Poe: Poems” by Poe and Edmund Clarence Stedman, the name William Coleman was given credit for a photograph of Poe.

William Coleman and O. M. Remington were cited on the Edgar Allen Poe Society website.

One CDV photograph from the Harvard University Library credited to Coleman and Remington was dated 1869.

Coleman was a lifelong photographer. He apparently never married and lived in boarding houses all his life. There are many city directory listings for him and for Coleman and Remington. The earliest reference to Coleman as a “Photographist” is in the 1862 Providence, RI, city directory and the last reference as a photographer is in the 1903 Providence, RI, city directory. He died in 1904 at the age of 74.

Although he was listed as “photographer” in the residential sections of the city directories, he was never listed in the business section under photographers. This means he probably didn't have a studio of his own but worked instead for other photographers.

He and Remington were apparently partners from 1868 to 1876.
