Christopher C Cook and "Bergeron"

photographer: Bergeron
Fort Smith, AR
example from LOST GALLERY

Here is a scarce card.

There was no trouble finding the Bergeron name along the US east coast, Maine to Florida but it is very scarce in Arkansas.

There is an 1882 newspaper item that says Cook and Bergeron, photographers in Fort Smith are planning to establish in Little Rock, AR. (See below)

Available city directories for Fort Smith begin at 1907 and none earlier.

The earliest Fayetteville, AR, city directory available is 1939.

There is no Little Rock city directory available for 1882.

The life of photographer Christpoher Cook is reviewed here because that is the only place photographer Bergeron is mentioned. The ONE mention of Bergeron is highlighted. NO other information has been found.

Not the one you were looking for? Here's the photographer's INDEX by name. All the Cabinet Card photographers of the 19th century found in LOST GALLERY are listed there.

Cabinet cards typically have the photographer’s name and address printed on the bottom edge or the reverse of the card. 19th century photographers moved around a lot. The basic idea here is to find WHEN a photographer was WHERE, which will help date an unidentified CABINET CARD from your family album.

This is a work always in progress.

Aditional information and New examples are always welcome. Any additional information will help narrow the time that these precious antiques were made.

All submissions should be free of glare and shadows.

Leave a border around each card. The edges are sometimes an important clue to the age of the card.

Collins

Photographer: Collins
Broadway, Schuylerville, N. Y.
example from LOST GALLERY

Collins seems a very common name in New York State around the turn of the 20th century.

One Collins found connected with photography was Henry A. Collins in Courtlandville, New York in the 1880 US Census. He is listed there as 21 years old and his profession described as “works for photographer”. He is a lodger in the same house as Irving C. Page, photographer. He was born in New York and his parents came from England.

This however, is the only item found of photography with any Henry Collins.

This Henry A. Collins also had a son named Henry A. Collins.

The 1870 US Census lists four Henry A. Collins living in New York State. No photographers. The 1900 US Census shows there were at least two Henry A. Collins living in New York State. Again no photographers. Their professions mentioned were engineer, marine engineer, plumber, maintenance and shipping yard.

If the photographer was Henry Collins, it appears he was only in the business for a short time.

Another possible choice is Harry S. Collins. (1862-)
Harry S. Collins emigrated from England in 1887 and lived in New York State for the rest of his life, always as a photographer. But there is no documentation saying he was ever in Schuylerville, New York.

November 22, 2024:
A very informative comment from John Dale

"Just to help out, the Pifer in Cleveland is most definitely not the same Pfeifer in Columbus. The spelling is not the same and the records do not show him as practicing in Cleveland. Additionally, there are two John Pfeifers working in Columbus at this time. One, John A Pfeifer, is the son of Casper Pfeifer and is working as a photographer. The other is the son of Mathias Pfeifer and is working in the printing and publishing business. Casper and Mathias are both sons of Peter Pfeifer, and the two John's would be cousins."

Thanks for the help John!
