Photographer: Lutz & DeVol
Sullivan, Ind

There was no scarcity of the Lutz name in the 19th century. There were several living in Ohio and four in Cincinnati. Three of them migrated from Baden, Germany. They otherwise seem unrelated. John N. Lutz seems the most likely. He lived in several cities in Ohio and Kentucky before settling somewhat in Portsmouth, OH.

DeVol

Only one document was found that might relate to the Devol of this partnership. In the 1866 Omaha, Nebraska, city directory there is listed G. C. Devol, photographer. This would mean that G. C. DeVol would have been born in the 1840’s or earlier. The possibility is strengthened only by the fact that most likely photographer found was J N Lutz who was born in 1842, making them possibly of similar age.

However, neither of the two can be documented as being in Sullivan, IN, so it is mostly speculation.

The example at the right is from contributor Mike S. who found it at an estate sale.

The photograph is titled "The House of Representatives Of Dakota 1887." It was done by L D Judkins.

It is not a cabinet card but is a good example of the work being done.

The size is 16" X 20"

photographer: Judkins
Seattle, WA
example from auction site

No evidence has been found that Lorenzo D Judkins was ever in Seattle, WA. The card at the left was probably done by David Roby Judkins, (1836-1908), a brother of Lorenzo Judkins.

The following was found and submitted by contributor Mike S:

From the website Archives West:
David Roby Judkins was born on January 17, 1836 in Chesterville, Maine. He spent most of his early years as a photographer travelling between Illinois and California; by 1879, he had established a studio in Port Townsend, Washington. By March 1880, Judkins had begun doing business on the Seattle waterfront. Later, he had his studio mounted on a barge, to become "Judkins' Floating Sunbeam Gallery", or the "Cottage Gallery", thus being able to visit and do business in various ports in Puget Sound.

Lorenzo Judkins and Ida A. Bangs were married on December 25, 1880.

Following the birth of the couple's first child, John Roby (1882-1903), Judkins sailed his gallery up the Fraser River and settled in Vancouver Island for 11 months.

During that time, his second child Edith (1883-1900) was born. The family returned to Seattle in 1884, at which point Judkins sold his "Floating Gallery".

For the next few years, Judkins would operate studios around Seattle (including the southwest corner of Second and Columbia Streets, and Judkins' house at 522 Depot Street).

A third child, Etta Hazel was born in January 1891. Four years later (1896), Ida A (Bangs) Judkins died.

In 1898 and 1899, Judkins followed the Yukon gold rush. During the latter part of this period, he ran his "Pullman Photographic Gallery" in Skagway, Alaska.

Following daughter Edith and son John Roby’s deaths from consumption, Judkins and daughter Etta Hazel moved to California in 1903. Lorenzo Judkins died on December 11, 1909.
