There is an Edwin Winans, engineer in New York, NY, from about 1876 to 1884 but this is probably not the photographer as in 1876 the photographer was only 14 years old. From 1888 to 1889 an Edwin Winans worked “treadles” in New York, NY.
The only two mentions of photography are in an 1899 genealogy narrative of Cleveland, OH, families and the 1900 US census where he is listed as “Artist”.
From 1909 on to his death in 1917, Edwin Winans is listed as salesman in Cleveland, OH.
Was there more than one Edwin Winans? Possibly. It Is the Superman/Clark Kent example again. While Salesman Edwin is found, where was Photographer Edwin?
The available documents make it look fairly certain that Edwin was a photographer from 1899 through about 1907.
Some cabinet cards are imprinted from the studio of Mereness and Winans. Mereness was a photographer from about 1871 to 1900. The partnership with William H. Mereness was probably early on as Mereness died around 1900.
This cabinet card at the top was probably done around 1900 but before 1907.

Keep up the good work here! I am a descendant of the Winans family. Edwin was my Great, Great, Great Uncle. His wife's name was Emelyn (Buckley) Winans married June 17th 1886. Edwin would have been in his 40s while doing photography when he took over from Mereness Photography in and around 1900. My guess is that the town went through a rough time towards the end of his photograph career as the town suffered numerous fires in the downtown during that period of 1900 to 1906. According to a man named Otto Palfenier's (now deceased) work ( based partly on Ann Winans book 1987) and your site helped tremendously in piecing in some critical information and it was nice to see his work in the wild! I myself am trying to piece together some family history. At some point would love to get some of those original post cards myself. Thanks again!

DeleteMe again.. I discovered through looking at old phone records that Edwin worked for the Deerfield Mineral Spirits Co. (beverage company) In Ohio in 1914-15. They had a Sandusky Ohio plant there. He was a sales manager. I have a date of March 6th 1917 when he died however i have not been able to locate a grave stone or site to corroborate this yet but did see this somewhere along the way. He moved at least twice in Ohio. i have both addresses but will not share those. I also don't know if he moved back to Oneonta before his death or where he actually died. I also don't know if he kept up his photography after 1907. Its also unknown whether he had any more children. His only child died around 31 years of age.
