Sometime between 1878 and 1888, Charles A Birdsall changed his name to Chas Grey. He says it was to save the embarrassment of a teenage marriage which was dissolved. His business career was then conducted as Charles A Grey.

He continued as photographer in Holden, Harrisonville, Warrensburg and Madison, Missouri He also was located in Coffeeville and Kansas City, Kansas.
