Christensen

Several photographers named Christensen were found, four in Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska. This item from the Bulletin of Photography vol 22 - 1918 makes A C Christensen seem the best choice: “A. C. Christensen of Nelson, NE has disposed of his studio to H F Galusha.”

Nelson, NE, is only about 80 miles from St. Paul, NE, but the only A C Christensen found, although he lived in St Paul, NE, 1900-1910, was not born until 1891, much too late to be the photographer here.

So at this point, the Christensen credited here was probably an itinerant photographer based in another larger town. St Paul, NE, was on a rail line from Grand Island, NE, and other points, such as Duluth, MN.

Commenter D W Bradley has discovered evidence that the initials are indeed H P Christensen and not P H.

Evidence so far indicates the photographer Christensen of Nebraska was the same as the Christensen of Minnesota.

Not the one you were looking for? Here's the photographer's INDEX by name. Listed here are all the Cabinet Card photographers of the 19th century found in LOST GALLERY. This is a work in progress. For a look at the original postings go to LOST GALLERY.

New examples and additional information are always welcome. Any additional information will help narrow the time that these precious antiques were made.

All submissions should be free of glare and shadows. Do not crop. Leave a border around each card. The edges are sometimes an important clue to the age of the card.

  1. H. P. Christensen *(son) was found in the Palo Alto Reporter May 14, 1886, Page 4, Emmetsburg, IA. He posted notice in this edition of the Reporter that he intended to visit the community once a year but he will provide quality work despite people saying a traveling photographer will not do so. (*) Although his newspaper ad shows the last name with "SON", all of the cabinet card photos show the selling as "SEN". Some newspapers were careless about correct name spelling, I have to believe he would have made sure his photo cover information was spelled correct. Don W. Bradley - Emmetsburg, IA.

    1. You’re right about that! Newspapers were sometimes a little loose about accuracy in the 1880’s. I was unable to find a copy of the item you mention as apparently Newspapers.com does not carry the Palo Alto Reporter. If you have a copy email it to the address found in the profile at the bottom of this page and I will add it to the profile page.

It also tells us that the initials were “H P” and not “P H”! Good find!
