There seems to have been more than one G C Bauman in Midwest US and at least four photographers with the name George Bauman, which confused research a bit.

It appears that George Bauman only moved his studio two times in his career. Starting with his studio in Galesburg, IL, he moved first to 211 ½ Jefferson in Burlington, IL, and then to 318 ½ Jefferson in Burlington and then he retired about 1935.

This cabinet card at the top, was probably finished while Bauman was living in Galesburg, IL, between 1882 and 1894. There is a gap in the information found on him but it appears he did not move to Burlington, IL until 1894.

Here is a new clue to the photography career of G C Bauman. The card at the right, submitted by D Martin shows the photographer as “Bauman and Brown, at 119 Main St in Galesburg, IL”. This is perhaps, H R Brown who had a studio Sioux City, IA, and other towns in that area.

It was the custom of many photographers of the cabinet card era, with an established studio in one town, to take on a “Partner” to operate a studio in another town. That is perhaps the case here. If this is true, this is a clue to the early activity (1880-1885) of the photographer G C Bauman.

Do you have a card imprinted like this one?

Not the one you were looking for? Here's the photographer's INDEX by name. Listed here are all the Cabinet Card photographers of the 19th century found in LOST GALLERY. This is a work in progress. For a look at the original postings go to LOST GALLERY.

New examples and additional information are always welcome. Any additional information will help narrow the time that these precious antiques were made.

All submissions should be free of glare and shadows. Do not crop. Leave a border around each card. The edges are sometimes an important clue to the age of the card.

Some examples on this page have been enhanced or restored for clarity and presentation here.

  2. I found a circa 1890 group photo behind something else in a frame. Only marking in pencil on from what looks like Bauman Studio. I came across your page because I was searching for Bauman in Knox Co. Next to the photo in the frame was a newpaper cutout from Knox Co. Although there are 9 knox co. in the US. This is a Bauman photographer who worked in Knox Co. I will send a picture if you'd like to see it and identify it as your Bauman photographer?
