Holland

Charles E Holland (1869-1949)
Henry Fisk Holland (1862 -)
Sadie M Holland (1881- )
Thomas Holland (1848-1908)
William A Holland Sr (1814-1901)
William A Holland Jr (1845 - 1930)

Brothers Charles, Henry, Thomas and William were all photographers in and around Boston between about 1892 and 1901.

Charles E Holland began in photography with his father William A Sr 1892 through 1895. It appears that he became a leader in a religious cult for most of the rest of his life.

In 1886 Henry F entered into partnership with George P Roberts forming Holland and Roberts photography at 10 Temple Place, in Boston. The partnership does not last long. By 1889, Holland is running the studio alone, assisted by his brother Thomas. In March of 1890, Henry files for bankruptcy and the studio at 10 Temple Place is closed. Henry goes into the electric business and does not return to photography. Any cabinet cards imprinted “Holland and Roberts” would be from about 1886 and 1887. If they are imprinted just “Holland” then they would be from about 1888 to 1990.

Thomas Holland continues on in photography with his father, William A Sr, in a studio at 611 Washington until about 1896. He then moves to Wakefield, MA, but continues to work at 611 Washington in Boston that year. By 1898 the studio at 611 Washington in Boston has closed and he has a studio in Wakefield, MA, on Main at the corner of Crystal and Montrose. His home address is 257 Albion.

Sadie (in some records, Sarah) M Holland, daughter of Thomas, was also listed as photographer in records from 1900. By 1910 she is working in a cotton mill.

William A Holland Sr, after working with son Thomas at 611 Washington, works for other studios until 1900. The 1900 US census shows he is working as a frame maker. He dies in 1901

William A Holland Jr apparently never married and followed several professions in his lifetime, from bell boy to frame maker. No records exactly place him as photographer but it is not hard to imagine working in one of the studios with his brothers and father at least for a short time. He often lived at the same address as his father in later years.

There is a nice biography on Henry F Holland at
