John James Noonan

Unidentified man
Photographer: J. J. Noonan
Hickman, KY

Hickman (KY) Courier - 09 Jun 1893

Unfortunately there were at least three photographers named J. J. Noonan in the eastern part of the US during the cabinet card era. Two of them were born the same year and had wives with the same first name.

However, one of them was born in Columbus, Hickman County, KY, and lived in Obion, TN, from about 1897 to 1910. Obion is just over 20 miles from the city of Hickman, KY, the town on this cabinet card. The city of Hickman, KY, is not in Hickman County, KY but is just a short distance from the cities of Columbus, KY, and Paducah, KY, where this J. J. Noonan also lived at one time.

John James Noonan
(12 Feb 1860 - 20 Dec 1923)

Apparently J. J. Noonan lived in New Madrid County, MO, until he was about 17-20. He hasn’t been found it the US Census of 1880, which would be a great help in establishing his whereabouts at age 20.

According to his children’s birth dates and locations, the family was living in Obion, KY by 1895. They stayed there until at least 1910 then moving to Paducah, KY where he died in 1923.

This cabinet card could have been made in that brief period when he was still living in Hickman, KY, about 1880 to 1893 as the clipping at the left indicates.

The enlarged medallion design at the left is of an artist's palette with brushes and cut flowers.

Contributor G Cullen has pointed out that the medallion logo on this card appears identical to the one on the card by J J Noonan, at the top of the page. He says he has also discovered three other cards with the same medallion design.

Indeed, this may be a generic imprint found on stock cabinet card blanks sold by printers or photograph material suppliers.

Note three different imprint designs for the short time Mulvane would have been in Bennet, NE.

Also note the sloppy handling of the first example, with the imprint slanted on the card. This would result from not insuring the card was in the hand press straight before printing.

Ozro Mulvane moved around a lot. In tracing his whereabouts it was often necessary to settle only for where he wasn’t instead of establishing where he was.

Known locations as photographer
Kansas City, MO / 1899-1900
Lincoln, NE / circa 1900-1901
Hastings, NE / 1903 as photographer for G E Payne
Cedar Rapids, IA / 1905 - 1908 Jan 18
Deadwood, SD / 1908 Oct 12
Lead, SD / 1909 Jul 22 (Lead and Deadwood are only 3 miles apart)
Kansas City, MO, at 810 ½ Frederick / 1910 Feb to 1915
Kansas City, MO / 1919 (& possibly 1920) working for B Weatherwax
Butte, MT -/ 1921 - 1924
Chicago, IL / 1930 (probably working for someone else)

No documents have been found, so far, to fill in the gaps.

Nothing has been found to show when Mulvane was actually in Bennet, NE, but it was probably around the same time he was in Lincoln, N circa 1900. The towns are only 17 miles apart.

Also, the city directories for Lincoln, NE, in 1899 and 1900 do not list him. But those same years, two brothers, JD and Frank were living in nearby Raymond, NE, just 14 miles from Lincoln.

William C Williams

photographer W C WIlliams
Clayton, IL

William C Williams
(Nov 1846 - 28 Apr 1930)

There are no city directories or newspaper files available for Clayton, IL, at this time. The only records available for W C Williams were the US census for 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. The 1870 US census shows a W Williams as farm laborer but it is not certain this is the same Williams.

W C Williams is shown as photographer in 1880 and 1900. By 1910 he is shown as a merchant of dry goods.

The 1920 and the 1930 show him as no occupation. He dies at age 83, seven days after being enumerated in the 1930 US census.

William H Smith

photographer: Smith and Hooper
Washington, KS

See Henry Thomas Hooper page for timeline and biography.

W H Smith was a rather popular name around the northeast quarter of Kansas in the 19th century. Attorney, seed dealer, politician, cattleman, postmaster, sheriff and many other occupations were found. These may have been all one person or several. No connections have been made.

According to a Kansas tax roll, at least one of them was a photographer for a short time in Pardee, KS. Pardee, KS, became a ghost town about 1905, so unfortunately there is little information about the place.

What can be established is from two small advertisements in the Columbus (KS) weekly, 5 March 1885 and 12 March at the Southeast Corner of the Square. By April of the same year, the corner had been taken by D C Bacon, photographer. No earlier ads were found.

There were at least, two men named William H Smith in the right area and about the right time. Around the turn of the century, they both lived in the same town, Chanute, KS. One was a clerk for a drug company and the other was the husband of Mary Elizabeth Mater-Smith, photographer at Chanute, KS. Chanute is about 70 Miles from Columbus, KS. Chanute however is about 150 miles from Pardee, KS, where the tax roll says a William H Smith, photographer was working in 1865.

So no conclusions can be drawn about who the W H Smith was on the Kansas tax roll.

He was probably NOT the Smith in the partnership of Smith and Hooper.

The cabinet card at the left is by Hooper and Smith. Henry Thomas Hooper was found and documented fairly well. See Henry Thomas Hooper page.

But there were at least NINE photographers named Smith that could POSSIBLY have been in Washington, KS, for a brief stay, between the years of 1892 and 1909. This is a list:

Smith, Charles P, Topeka, KS
(123 miles to Washington)
Smith, Eugene Warren, Pittsburg, KS (290 miles to Washington)
Smith, Gregory, Ottawa, KS (171 miles to Washington)
Smith, Mrs M E, Chanute, KS; AKA Mrs M E Smith AND Mrs Mary Elizabeth Maters-Smith
Smith, P S, Le Roy, KS (193 miles to Washington)(the same as Peter Smith?)
Smith, Peter, Seneca, KS (71 miles to Washington)(No information found on either)
Smith, R R, Larned, KS (191 miles to Washington)
Smith, Rodrigo Gilbert Leavenworth, KS (144 miles to Washington)
Smith, W H, Pardee, KS, (Pardee is now a ghost town in Atchison county, KS)(117 miles to Washington)

The photographer Smith, of Hooper and Smith, could be any one or none of these. In order to determine which, if any, of these photographers was possibly the one associated with Henry T Hooper in Washington, KS, a timeline or biography for each was developed.

The research above indicates that William H Smith was probably NOT the photographer in partnership with H T Hooper in Washington, KS.

After investigating all of the Smith photographers in this list, Rodrigo Gilbert Smith appears to be the photographer that was partners with
Henry T Hooper in Washington, KS,
around 1891.
