Mrs H M Berglof

photographer: Mrs H M Berglof
Concordia, KS
example from Ancestry.com

Not much has been found (for sure) about J F Berglof. It appears he was a successful business man in several fields, selling merchandise from onions to lumber. His “store” in Kansas, apparently included a photograph gallery. He advertised often and newspaper notices of his death are fairly certain so it can be fairly well established exactly when Hedvig Wilhelmina "Minnie" Norlin, or as she was called then,
---------------“Mrs J F Berglof”-------------
took over the photograph business. nd of course she was working in the Berglof studio before, but the imprint was probably J F Berglof, her husband.

J F Berglof established the first gallery “just south of the lumber yard” (which he apparently owned also) in Marquette, KS in September of 1889. The gallery moved to Hutchinson, KS, about May of 1891 but the stay was apparently short.

Then in December of 1891, J F Berglof dies of consumption.

Life goes on and advertising for the photo gallery continues in January of 1892.

February 4, 1892 an official announcement appears in the Marquette, KS, Gazette that
------------“Mrs H M Berglof”----------
(now using her own initials) will continue the photograph gallery at the “old stand” 17 So Main, in Marquette. She was assisted by a niece, “Miss Berglof”. The other businesses apparently continued also.

By January of 1894, Mrs Berglof is considering closing the gallery, at least for a while. In February there is an announcement that a Henry Braker is considering taking over the gallery.

In April of 1894, there is an advertisement for a shoe sale at the store of H M Berglof. In May there appears an item in the Marquette paper that the sale was a success.

In June of 1894, Mrs Berglof has opened a branch studio in Concordia, KS. An advertisement gets her name wrong as “Mrs C M Berglof”.

In November of 1894 the Little River Monitor runs an item about the large stock of goods at the Marquette store of “Mr H M Berglof”. Seems the newspapers just can’t get used to a woman running a business.

In December of 1894 the Concordia (KS) Daylight runs a large display ad for the gallery there, operated by Mrs H M Berglof.

By 1899, Mrs Berglof has apparently given up the studio in Concordia and Photographer M E Sholl has taken over the location. Then nothing further has been found about Mrs Berglof.

Records get a bit sketchy after 1900 but there is some indication that Mrs Berflof moved to Nebraska or Washington and after outliving two more husbands, died in 1948.

It can be established that any card imprinted Mrs H M Berglof as photographer, was probably done between January of 1892 and May of 1899.

Interesting Note: NO examples of cabinet cards with the imprint of J F Berglof or Fritz Berglof have been found so far. Several have been found with the Mrs H M Berglof imprint.

A more detailed timeline based mostly on newspaper items and advertising, follows.
