The documents on Jarvis White are rather scarce but the Davenport, IA, studio “Jarvis White Art Co.” operated under that name from about 1890 to 1900. Jarvis White might actually have operated the place from about 1890 to 1892, and then he returned to Superior, WI, and acted only as “president” of the company. It was about an 8 hour trip by train.

In 1894, John B Hostetler took over as president at the same location and kept the name “Jarvis White Art Co” until 1900.

So, any cabinet cards with the imprint of only, “Jarvis White Art Co, could have been done at any time during that decade from 1890 to 1900. Other imprints might narrow it down a bit.

New examples and additional information are always welcome. Any additional information will help narrow the time that these precious antiques were made. All submissions should be free of glare and shadows. Do not crop. Leave a border around each card. The edges are sometimes an important clue to the age of the card.

Some examples on this page have been enhanced or restored for clarity and presentation here.
