L Rice of Manchester, IN

photographer: L Rice
N Manchester, IN
example from LOST GALLERY
reverse of card at left

Lozier Don Rice was a photographer from about 1910, age 20, to sometime in the 1940’s, when he retired because of illness. The Cabinet Card example shown here is a rarity in that the cabinet card format was all but a novelty after about 1900.

He worked with his father, Arthur Phoenician Rice in Wabash, IN until opening his own studio in North Manchester, IN. According to one obituary, L D Rice was ill for nine years before his death in 1952.

Since it rather unusual to see a cabinet card from those years, there is little possibility of dating the card other than placing it as some time during his career. He was apparently active from about 1920 to about 1940.

If more information becomes available, it will be added here.

Ramsey's Galleries

photographer Ramsey's Galleries
Galletin, Linneus, Lawson,

example from LOST GALLERY

This timeline was construction mostly from small newspaper ads and news items.

There seems to have been two photographers named Ramsey in the area, working about the same time. The whole names W. Y. Ramsey and O. M. J. Ramsey appear now and then but mostly the ads just say “Ramsey’s” gallery.

Wilson Y Ramsey newspaper items found are mostly from towns in Kansas and one from Hermitage, MO. All the census reports and other documents for that name, refer to him as “farmer” and civil war soldier.

Otis M J Ramsey ads appear mostly in the small towns of Missouri: Linneus, Gallatin, McFall, three of the towns listed on the cabinet card example here.

Photographer “Ramsey” might also have operated from a mobile studio. No confirmation of this has been found but this is one way he could have been in so many places within a short time. Passenger rail lines were much more common in those days. Although all the towns listed on thia cabinet card were in Missouri, they were NOT close together. Lawson is more than 60 miles from Lineus. Not an easy distance in those days, even by passenger train.

Proctor, J H, of Girard, Kansas

photographer" Proctor
Girard, KS
example from LOST GALLERY

James Henry Proctor and his son Edward were photographers in Girard and nearby towns for most of their careers. James moved to Omaha, NE, some time between 1896 and 1900. His son, Edward lived in Girard, KS, Omaha, NE, and Neosho, MO.

While they both lived in Girard, KS, the newspaper ads often only mentioned the studio by the name “Proctor” leaving it unknown if it was for James Henry or Edwin L Proctor. They both moved around the Girard town square a couple times, so ads place them, for example, at “North Side of square” or “East side of Square”
