Oscar Daniel Kuhns is a hard one to follow. His activities were so wide and varied that it is difficult to tell if it was one man with many interests or three people with the same name.

It’s a bit of a stretch to think of there being more than one person named Oscar D Kuhns in the same corner of Kansas in the late 1800’s.

To add more complication, the newspapers seemed unable to settle on the name, sometimes spelling it “Kuhn” and other times “Kuhns” or even “Kunz”. One ad, from 1889, spells the name two ways, “Kuhn’s” and “Kuhns”.

One obituary found does not mention his photographic career but places his death in 1940.

Another newspaper item about a son, Charles, says Oscar died prior to 1922. Another news item from Pittsburg, PA, says Oscar D Kuhns, 88, died 30 Dec 1959. Complicating further, no othe menion of a son has been found.

So this timeline will contain contradictory items but does show a career in photography that stretches from about Feb 1888 to June of 1893. From 1888 to May 1890 he operated his own “Kuhn’s Gallery” in El Dorado, Kansas. Then from April of 1891 to about June of 1893, he was the “manager” of the McLeod Gallery, 509 Commercial St, Atchison, KS.
