US census shows a Daniel H Hamilton, born in New York, as “photographer” in New Castle, IN, with wife Emma, born 1848 in Iowa, listed as a “Portrait Painter”.
The Fort Wayne, IN, city directories for 1872 through 1875 do not include Hamilton. The 1876 Fort Wayne, IN, is unavailable. This means that Hamilton did not arrive in Fort Wayne, IN, until late 1876 or early 1877.

In 1889 Daniel H. Hamilton is listed in both the Grand Rapids, MI, city directory and the Milwaukee, WI, city directory. The two cities are 113 miles apart, straight across Lake Michigan. He apparently had a studio in both cities at the same time.

An obituary on Find-A-Grave website says that Daniel H. Hamilton was born in New York, died 3 Oct 1891 in Grand Rapids, MI. But his wife in this document is named Elizabeth, also a photographer. This is probably an error. There were several wives named Elizabeth Hamilton around this time but none of them were photographers and none of them were in the right geographical location.

The Michigan Death Records shows a Daniel H. Hamilton, photographer, born in New York, died Oct 3, 1891 of heart disease. This record says the names of his wife and parents are “Unknown” .

Daniel H. Hamilton dies in 1891 but his wife Emma carries on the studio at 79 Canal in Grand Rapids, MI until about 1912.

The cabinet card here was probably finished between 1877 and 1886 when he left Fort Wayne, and moved to Grand Rapids, MI.

Jefferson Grant Speake
(1864 - ?)

Many of the photographers of the cabinet card era were upstanding citizens, involved in civic and social affairs in their communities. Many of them grew very rich through investments and real estate transactions. And hard work. J Grant Speake does not appear to have been such a photographer.

He changed the name of his studio at least four times. He changed partners at least three times. He moved around a lot. And he was jailed at one time for trying to bilk some customers out of their money by not delivering their ordered prints. He was apparently saved from a jail term by his wife who finished up photographs while J Grant Speake was in jail, and delivered the merchandise to the complaining customers.

Sometime between 1905 and 1910, Jefferson Grant Speake dies. No documentation has been found as yet. After 1904 he either died or changed his location again. Neither Jefferson Grant Speake nor his wife, Hattie E Walton, have been found in those years.

Hattie “Nina” Ford-Speake was the wife of James Burford Speake. No records found show she was the wife of Jefferson Grant Speake. (Wrong connection made at newpaper)


So there are records that show J Grant Speake was operating at 124 Twelfth Street from May of 1891 through August of 1892. An 1891 city directory ad shows that the studio was called “LeGrand” at least at press time for the directory.

A Newspaper item from 04 August 1892 says that J G Speake has moved from 124 South Twelfth to 1026 O Street.

It is only a guess but the studio might have been called “LeGrand” only in that brief period between July of 1891 and February of 1892.

Henry Hardie was born in Ellesmere, Shropshire, England. In 1867, when he was two, the family migrated to Canada. Charles Hardie was born in Middelsex, Ontario, Canada.

(US Census) In Hamilton, TN, Charles is living with his brother Henry and wife and three daughters. The 1900 US Census is the only document found that actually lists them living in the same house. Henry Hardie is shown as photographer and Charles Hardie apparently unemployed. This is the only time photography is mentioned in any record found of either brother.

Signal Mountain, Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain are all in Hamilton, County, TN.
The only time the Hardie brothers were together in Hamilton County, TN, is 1899 to 1905

This may not be a cabinet card at all. The copy found had been cropped so the original format is unknown. It has been presented here as a cabinet card as this seems to be the dominant format used by this photographer.

Many of the photographs of Umbrella Rock found over the past several years have been cropped, damaged or distorted in some way. The photographer is often not identified.

Some were done by photographer J Birny Linn and his brother, Robert M Linn. A great accounting of this photographer can be seen at
Jeffery Kraus Antique Photographics.

Perhaps there were other professional photographers working that spot. The site was declared "Dangerous" and fenced off in about 1938. But before then, many tourists had a chance to get a snapshot of the historic spot.

There were many newspaper articles mentioning B. W. Barrett in North Carolina, Georgia, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Louisiana. None of these could be connected to being a photographer in Indiana.

There were many small ads for Home Portrait Co. in Indiana newspapers of Indianapolis, Bookville and Fort Wayne but none seemed connected to a studio at 41 N Main, in Kokomo, IN.

Unfortunately too, there are no Kokomo, IN, city directories available before 1913.

Home Portrait Company of Indianapolis apparently had several people working under that name as photographers and agents.
