Photographer: Clark's Photography
and Dental Rooms
1st Building South of New Bank
Rushville, Illinois
As one might imagine, there were several dentists in central Illinois
about the right age to also be a cabinet card photographer. However,
no connection has been made with any of these who had a sideline in
photography.
In general, the card design, straight edges and rounded corners, was used 1880 and after.
Various photographers named Clark will be reviewed on this page.
Perhaps one will emerge as the possible photographer for this card. Concentration will be the Clark photographer of the midwest US.
Some of them will be reviewed here and perhaps an obvious candidate will emerge.
According to city directory listings, Charles W Clark was a photographer only a short time. He is iisted in the Indianapolis city directory as photographer in 1890, 1891, 1893, 1895 and 1896. In 1894 he is shown as "Machinist".
He is not listed at all in the 1892 edition, which is possibly when he was in Tipton, IN, as photographer
Other entries around that period, show him as "Machinist" with no mention of "photographer" after 1896.
Davis Lawler Clark
(1840 – 1891)
Davis L Clark
(as mentioned in
Daniel Russell Clark timeline 1872 - 1875.)
This was a difficult photographer to trace as there were very few biographical records. The business history was much better but there are some gaps.

Edgar Lewis Clark
(1863 – 1944)
E L Clark was a life-long photographer starting out in his father’s studio in Woodford, IL at age 17 according to the 1880 US census. Edgar Clark, his mother and brothers moved to Watsonville, CA, about that same year.
He took over the Fell studio i In Watsonville, Dec 1888, and continued in the photography business until at least 1930. He died in 1944.

Photographer:
H. G. Brown & E. W. Clark
No. 11 Broadway
Whitehall, N. Y.
(Listed under H. G. Brown also)
The name E. W. Clark turns up often in searches but there is nothing to indicate which is the right one.
Many of the photographers of that era worked in other professions and did studio photography as a side-line. Hence, a census or city directory might identify them as "merchant" or "laborer" and the photography goes without credit.
John Barto Clark
(1870-1945)

John B Clark was apparently a life-long photographer and never left Meridian, MS. The only time the “Elite” studio was mentioned in records was in the 1901 city directory.

INDEX by name.
All the Cabinet Card photographers of the 19th
century found in LOST GALLERY are listed there.
Cabinet cards typically have the photographer’s name and address printed on the bottom edge or the reverse of the card. 19th century photographers moved around a lot. The basic idea here is to find WHEN a photographer was WHERE, which will help date an unidentified CABINET CARD from your family album.
This is a work always in progress.
Aditional information and New examples are always welcome. Any
additional information will help narrow the time that these precious
antiques were made.
All submissions should be free of glare and
shadows.
Do not crop.
Leave a border around each card. The edges are
sometimes an important clue to the age of the card.
