Francis Marion Reynolds
(11 Apr 1849 - 3 Mar 1934)
The earliest record found for F. M. Reynolds as a photographer is a
mention in a news item in the Burlington (Iowa) Weekly, 9 Dec 1875. In
1883 and 1885 records show he is in Harlan, IA.
F. M. Reynolds then worked in David City, NE, as a photographer from
about 1887 to sometime before 1917. He then moved his business to
Omaha, NE. The family moved to Kansas City, MO about 1931. He died in
Kansas City, MO, in 1934.
The cabinet card to the left must have been finished between 1887 and
1917.
The example at the left is probably from F M Reynolds as Beatrice,
NE, is only 40 miles from Reynolds, NE.
The three examples at the left are by J H Reynolds. Thanks to a comment from a family member, J H Reynolds has been confirmed as Joseph H Reynolds, a brother of Francis M Reynolds.

Leave a border around each card. The edges are
sometimes an important clue to the age of the card.

I have another really nice F.M. REYNOLDS photo from David City that I'd provide you with a copy of if interested. Free of course.
ReplyDeleteGreat! Always glad to have more examples. Send a good scan to the address in the profile. See the helpful hints in the box just above the comment section. Thanks very much!
DeleteMy step-mother-inlaw just passed away. Going through her things and came across photos and journals of her family history on her mother's side.
ReplyDeleteFrances Reynolds was her Great-grandfather's brother. He was one of 11 siblings. I'm happy to learn they are called cabinet cards. We have a collection of them taken of the Reynolds family.
His brother built the town of Reynolds on the H.C.R. ranch in Kiowa Ok. He was the Post Master General. He was also a traveling photographer before settling down.
Thank you for your informative comment.
DeleteLet me express my sympathy for the passing of your family member.
I am happy that you were able to gain some information from the Reynolds page. Very little information was available on the photographic career of F M Reynolds. Your note also confirms what was suspected: his brother John H Reynolds was also a photographer. (Note the last cabinet card examples on the page.) Thank you.
If you wish to contribute any of your treasures to the Reynolds page, using the hints in the footer just above the comments section, send good scans to the email address found in the profile at the bottom of this page.
