Pittsburgh, PA, Henry Bower dies of Uremia at age 68
After a rather sketchy beginning, Henry Bower is established as
photographer at 200 Park Avenue from 1882 until 1909. This cabinet
card would have been finished during that period.
The card at the left was contributed by the family of William
Bullers.
Both Wellsburg, WV, and East Liverpool, OH, are both less than 40
miles from Pittsburg, PA. This card was most likely done by Henry
Bower in the years he was in East Liverpool, OH, 1800- 1888.
It appears Henry Bower's brother Charles got himself into a bit of
trouble while selling patent medicine.

New examples and additional information are always welcome. Any
additional information will help narrow the time that these precious
antiques were made.
All submissions should be free of glare and shadows. Do not crop.
Leave a border around each card. The edges are sometimes an
important clue to the age of the card.

Hi, do you know of anyone who collects these photographs? I have one of a baby with a handwritten, "Jack WD 1895" I really don't want to throw it away, but it is not anyone in my family. I acquired the photograph by acquiring the frame it was in.
ReplyDeleteYou will have no trouble finding someone who will care for it. They are going for a minimum of 5 dollars each on ebay and on up into the thousands for each card. Any local antique store would be glad to have it. Get it into a plastic bag. Good of you to care about it.
DeleteHenry Bower worked as a photographer in East Liverpool, Ohio, from approximately 1880-1888. His studio was at the corner of Fifth and Broadway. There are many ads for his business and stories that mention him in "The Saturday Review" as found on Nespapers.com. If you need more information or photos, please contact me at pennyallennelson(AT)outlook(DOT)com.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the nudge, Penny! I was looking for a good excuse to get back into this one. It's been three years since I worked on Bower. I always felt it was a bit thin.

DeleteThanks for the input!
I have updated the page with everything I could find. Check to see if I am missing anything. Newspaper.com site was a bit stingy with me and gave me only a few items showing his East Liverpool address.
I did find that two of his children were born in East Liverpool, OH.
Let me know if I missed anything.
Thanks again! (couldn't make your email address work)
