Although the advertising for Leonard and Martin continued until August
of 1886, the partnership seems to have dissolved around June of that
year. H T Martin is advertising under his own name but at the same
address from June 1886 on.

During all of 1889 and early 1890 H T Martin ran over 100
advertisements in Topeka newspapers for his studio at 237 Kansas
Avenue and his studio at 721 Kansas Avenue,
but never at the same time. It appears he was running two
studios and advertised them separately.
Then beginning August of 1890, the 721 Kansas studio drops out and
another address 629 Kansas is added. After that, the ads continued
still with one or the other address in each ad. At the end of 1889,
the 237 Kansas address seems to drop away and only the 629 Kansas
address continues until 1894 when he sells the studio to J H Creese.

For a few months in 1894, Martin engages in the automotive
business.
Martin then moves to Washington D C to take a seemingly rather
honorary position as Watchman at the Pension Office. He was appointed
by Kansas US senator, John Martin. (Relationship, if any, is unknown.)

Below are just a few of the ads repeated in the Topeka, Kansas,
newspapers in 1887, 1888 and 1889. Were the newspapers just getting
the address wrong or did Martin actually have two locations?

At the right is an unusual example.
There is no "Greensbury" Kansas.
But perhaps the printing us just blurred.
This is probably "Greensburg" or "Greenleaf" Kansas, each a couple
hundred miles from Topeka.
Or perhaps is it another Martin altogether!
Not the one you were looking for? Here's the photographer's INDEX by name. Listed here are all the Cabinet Card photographers of the 19th century found in LOST GALLERY. This is a work in progress. For a look at the original postings go to LOST GALLERY.
New examples and additional information are always welcome. Any additional information will help narrow the time that these precious antiques were made. All submissions should be free of glare and shadows. Do not crop. Leave a border around each card. The edges are sometimes an important clue to the age of the card.
