This additional identification and information from the card
owner:
Shotaro Sakamaki (1863-1919), a Japanese citizen who went to the
U.S. to study the hotel business in the spring of 1885.
The CdV at the right must have been done before or after the period when Sewell was partners with J G Hucks. Nothing has been found so far to document that period.

Hello anyjazz,
ReplyDeleteI am writing from Japan. I found your website when searching for New York Gallery in San Francisco where my great-grandfather, Shotaro Sakamaki, took his cabinet card photograph around 1885. He went to the U.S. to study the hotel management and opened his own hotel in Japan after he returned. I have the real cabinet card photograph with "New York Gallery, phtographer J.G. Hucks, 25 Third Street, San Francisco, CA" printed on the back. I am very glad to find out about J.G. Hucks on your page and wonder if my great-grandfather's photograph can be posted as one of Huck's works. If OK, please let me know how I can send the image to you. My mail address is ksakamaki5011@gmail.com Thank you. K.Sakamaki
