The Bachrach gallery was established at Lexington and Eutaw and apparently the original studio did not change locations for its entire history in Baltimore, Md. Moses Bachrach appears to be the main operator although the gallery is called “Bachrach and Bro” for most of its history.

David J Bachrach
Photographer. A prolific 19th century photographer, he was eighteen years old when he attended the November 19, 1863 dedication of of the National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. There, while working as a photography apprentice, he took the only known picture of President Abraham Lincoln at the dedication, which he snapped just after the President gave his famous "Gettysburg Address." He spent the rest of the war photographing exchanged prisoners. He then opened his own studio with his brother in 1868 in Baltimore, Maryland. It eventually grew into Bachrach Inc., and is still in existence today. He became an inventor and a respected writer on photographic art and technology. He and the studio pioneered the concept of the "Official Photo Portrait," hearkening back to when prominent members of society would sit for an official portrait painting.

Birth: Jul. 16, 1845 Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Death: Dec. 10, 1921 Roland Park Baltimore City Maryland, USA
David Bachrach was possibly Baltimore's most famous and respected studio photographer. He began training at the age of 15 under the tutelage of William H. Weaver, and is believed to have taken the only known photograph of Lincoln during the Gettysburg address. After working as assistant photographer at Ft. Gilmour, photographing exchanged prisoners, Bachrach opened his own studio in Baltimore in 1869. His photos of society ladies often appeared in the Baltimore SUN. He was an inventor and a writer on photographic art and technology. After his brother Moses joined the business, their studio took the name Bachrach & Brothers. Bachrach married Fannie Keyser in 1877. David's son Walter Keyser Bachrach took over the business in 1914.
