There are no city directories available for Columbia City, IN, so details about the locations of the Magley photograph businesses are very sketchy.

No newspaper advertising has been found. A scant few newspaper mentions were found and they were not helpful.

Magley got into the photography busyness as late as 1890 so cabinet card examples might be scarce. Th obituary of his wife indicates his studio was at 115 East Van Buren in Columbia City, IN for many years.

Obituary found at Find-a-Grave website:
MAGLEY, WILLIAM ELMER
COLUMBIA CITY POST, WHITLEY COUNTY, INDIANA
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 1942
William Elmer Magley, 75, well known local photographer, died at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, at the Magley residence, 115 East Van Buren street after an illness due to heart trouble. He was taken ill August 13.

Mr. Magley had been a resident of Columbia City for 39 years, and a photographer in this city practically all of that time. His parents were Frederick and Elizabeth Sumney Magley, well known pioneer residents of Whitley county. He was born in Thorncreek township February 19, 1867. His marriage to Cindora Campbell occurred in this city in 1906.

The widow survives with a daughter, Mrs. Joseph Sanders of the Bluffton road, Fort Wayne, and a son, Frederick Magley, 1706 1-2 New Haven Ave., Fort Wayne, also five grandchildren, and a brother, Merrill F. Magley of the Magley machine shop in this city.

Mr. Magley was for many years a member of the Blue River Church of the Brethren. Rev. L. U. Krider, pastor of that church, will officiate at funeral services to be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Luckenbill Funeral Home. Interment will be made in Greenhill cemetery. Friends will be received at the Funeral Home.

Not the one you were looking for? Here's the photographer's INDEX by name. All the Cabinet Card photographers of the 19th century found in LOST GALLERY are listed there.

Cabinet cards typically have the photographer’s name and address printed on the bottom edge or the reverse of the card. 19th century photographers moved around a lot. The basic idea here is to find WHEN a photographer was WHERE, which will help date an unidentified CABINET CARD from your family album.

This is a work always in progress.

Aditional information and New examples are always welcome. Any additional information will help narrow the time that these precious antiques were made.

All submissions should be free of glare and shadows.
Do not crop.
Leave a border around each card. The edges are sometimes an important clue to the age of the card.
