According to New York city directories,
Otto Frank began his photographic career in Syracuse, NY, at about age 12. He was born in Peru and immigrated to the US in 1863.

Records show that he had a photograph studio at 194 E 125th, (or the corner of 125th and Third Avenue) from 1886 to 1897.

It’s rather clear that about 1867, Samuel Bradbury Smith, of Honeoye NY, left dentistry to become a “photographist”. Then about 1880, he moved to Tacoma, WA, to be a travelling salesman for a while.
He apparently never returned to photography. His entire career as a photographer was about 20 years, all in Richmond County, NY.

G W Godfrey was a bit older than the usual photographer of the cabinet card era. He started with tintypes and Daguerreotypes and moved on to the CdV and Cabinet card format when they became popular.

There are only a few records of the life of George W Godfrey and they are mostly city directory listings.

G W Godfrey kept a gallery at 81 Main in Rochester, NY, from 1864 to 1882. Then from 1884 to 1887 he operated at 146 E Main in Rochester, NY.

Sarah L Cassidy and her sister Lodaska Cassidy, ran the galleries for Godfrey for about 20 years. When Godfrey died, they moved to Winter Park, Florida, to manage their orange grove. (See newspaper item below.)

The tintype at the left was probably not made at the Sunbeam studio. It was the practice back then to copy photographs of famous people and sell them in the lobby of the gallery.

Beeles and Sutton of NY

W L Sutton also worked in Hornellsville and Andover, NY, both less than 50 miles from Cohocton and Wayland NY. He seems to be the career photographer of the pair.

As is sometimes the case, perhaps Beeles was taken on as a “partner” just to operate branch studios in Wayland and Cohocton. This has been seen occasionally in other partnerships. Sometimes the lesser partner is put first in the card identification stamp as an inducement.

Quite likely all these small towns were connected by passenger trains in those days.

It is possible they only shared a studio in these towns and were seldom there at the same time.

H M Beeles worked in Blossburg and Troy, PA, both about 80 miles from Cohocton and Wayland, NY. This is PROBABLY the photographer that was in partnership with Sutton for galleries in Cohocton and Wayland, NY.

No documents have been found to indicate exactly when these two photographers might have been in partnership.

Variations in the spelling of the sur-name of Henry Moyer Beeles makes following his biography unreliable. Further, Beeles seems to have varied his career several times over the span of his life. He apparently graduated from the Fairfield Seminary and then took on careers of teacher, photographer, salesman, general farmer and possibly some others.

Only a few mentions of Henry M Beeles as photographer have been found: in the 1880 US census and in 1895 in the Olean (NY) County Democrat (See below). Sometime during that 15 year period, the business “partnership” between Beeles and Sutton formed and disolved. Quite possibly around 1891.
