Thomas L Parker seems to change locations regularly. It is not clear if he sometimes kept a studio open in his absence. A lack of city directory business section entries for those years suggest he did not.

The best that can be assembled is a trail showing the photographer’s locations but not his studios. Hopefully this will help date some cabinet cards.

Early cards should be easy to date as Herman Mueller moved around a lot before 1898, when he settled at 1129 Vine.

Streets in Milwaukee, WI, have shifted around somewhat since the late 1800’s. Third Street is now MLK street.

This cabinet card at the top would probably have been done sometime after 1886 up to 1897.

Cincinnati (OH) Enquirer Sun news item, Henry H Kumming will dated 16 Mar 1934 is now being probated

The records show that Henry Kumming was in business as a photographer between the years of 1887 and 1892. He apparently kept small galleries in small towns in the area of Cincinnati, OH, and Covington, KY.

After that, Kumming’s business history is a bit vague. Of course he would have been only about 19 in 1887. After 1892, he worked at various jobs, superintendent, “frame fitter” and salesman.

Research is also a bit confused as his name was spelled with a “C” occasionally. Plus, there was a Henry H Cumming during the same period who worked in the US government and another one who lived in the Pacific Northwest.

There is no Newport, KY, city directory available between 1772 and 1938 so confirming his presence in Newport is not presently possible. However since Newport is only 7 miles from Coventry, KY and only 7 miles across the river from Cincinnati, OH, it’s possible that he had studios in all three cities during that period as a photographer.

So it is only a guess that the card here, imprinted Newport, KY, was finished between 1887 and 1892.

The photograph at the far left was probably done around 1910 just after the marriage to Hattie I. Drake in 1908, as she is listed in the 1910 US Census as “Assistant Photographer” and not so in the 1920 Census. This is probably Drake not "Dake" as the imprint shows, and it is assumed here that the card is a miss-print. If a "Dake" ever does show up as a photographer, it will be changed here.

The near left might have been done any time between 1885 and 1908 or 1920 and 1930.

Cabinet cards typically have the photographer’s name and address printed on the bottom edge or the reverse of the card. 19th century photographers moved around a lot. This is a work always in progress.

John H Windisch

Photographer: Windisch
Oak Harbor, Ohio

Though John H. Windisch, the photographer, was found in data mostly in Toledo, it is not hard to imagine he worked the small towns within 20 miles of Toledo. Oak Harbor, OH, just 23 miles from Toledo, could be one of them. Oak Harbor is on a rail line directly from Toledo, OH.

And it could be work done just before he moved into Toledo, OH, but no records have been found to support that.

There was another person by the name of John Windisch in Ohio, about the same age, so his location in the early years is a bit uncertain. The years after 1900 tie together with occupations and addresses.
