Max Schultz dies at age 56

Due to some missing pages in the archives of the Chicago, IL, city directories for the years between 1890 and 1908, only a sketchy history of the locations of Max Schwartz can be made. It can be shown that Schultz was at 446 w Chicago av in Chicago in 1900 and 1904 but city directory archives for several years before and after are incomplete so it is not known at this time, how long he was there. By the 1910 US census he apparently had abandoned photography and had become a real estate agent, although the city directories for 1909, 1900 and 1910 do not support this.

Comparing the style of the cards shows that the above four with deckled edges are imprinted with 444 w Chicago Avenue, while the plain edged one at the left is imprinted with 446 w Chicago av. Plain edged card stock with right angle or rounded corners are typical of the early cabinet cards from 1866 to 1890. Deckled edge card stock did not become popular until around 1886. This might indicate that the 446 address was earlier than the 444. No records have been found to prove this.

This picture of Harry Walton, a Philadelphian Bare-Knuckle Pugilist (1884-1895) and vaudeville performer, was provided by his great-grandson, Timothy Bolton.

Henry Clay Miner
(1842 - 1900)

Henry Clay Miner was a wealthy businessman who lived in and around New York City, NY. His business interests included theater and talent management, real estate, drug stores, photography supplies, railroads, mining and a lithography company.

But he wasn’t a photographer.

The lithography business, at several locations over the years, was operated by his son Henry C Miner JR, from about 1892 on. The location at 342 w 14th ran from about 1892 to 1904.

Apparently a photography studio was part of the Minor lithograph business. The actual photographers are unknown at this time. A large part of H C Minor’s business apparently was in promotional posters for the theaters in New York, several of which were owned by Henry Clay Minor.

Name: Henry Clay Miner
MINER, HENRY CLAY, business man, congressman, was born March 23, 1842, in New York city. He was educated at the New York city grammar schools and at the American Institute school; studied the drug business and has been more or less engaged in that business. In 1864 he went out in advance of Signor Blitz, the magician and bird trainer; his next engagement was with Thayer and Noyes's circus, and eventually he became the head of a metropolitan theater, and then rose to the proprietorship of five popular Thespian resorts—the Fifth Avenue, the People's, Miner's Bowery, Eighth Avenue, and Miner's Newark theaters. He is president of the Miner Lithographing company, owns extensive phosphate interests in the south, holds large blocks of railway and mining stock in western corporations, directs a New York newspaper syndicate, and is the owner of a large drug store and photographic material house in New York city. He was elected to the fifty-fourth congress as a democrat.

Guerin was apparently active in his own studio from 1876 to 1903 when he sold out to
Emme and Mayme Gerhard

Note the awards.
The card reverse at the left would have been imprinted after 1892.

There are a lot of gaps in the history of Charles H LaRush. It appears he was an active photographer between about 1875 and 1890. He apparently worked out of a “car”, probably a railroad car, so his cards may not show a location in the imprint.

So far documents and newspaper items have placed LaRush in Sterling, Prophetstown, Walnut, Ohio Station, all in Illinois; Hamilton, Etobiocoke Township, Nottawasaga, St Vincent, all in Canada; and Toledo, Ohio

The "Assistant photographer" listed on the death certificate (above) as informant (fifth line from bottom) remains a mystery. Many combinations of spellings have been tried in search engines to find this person, with no results. If anyone has any idea who this is, leave a note in the comment section.
