Herman M Vaupel didn’t move around often. Here is a list of addresses where he worked as photographer, and the dates.

989 Third Street - from 1883 to 1899
734 Lexington Av - from 1902, 1903

After that he seems to drop out of the photography business. Herman Vaupel tries some other professions such as “cigar maker” and “billiard parlor” but the 1930 US census shows him again as photographer. Also his son Arthur is listed as photographer in the 1905 New York State census.

This gilt edged card is 6.5 x 8.5 inches which means in is not a standard cabinet card but a specialty size.

The contributor dates the card at 1889.

The deges are beveled and gilded. The gold does not show up well here.

Just below is the actual Vaupel studio camera.

In city directory listings photographer Anderson’s first name changes from “C G” to “Charles G” to “Carl G” and back, all at the same address as a photographer.

In the years following 1903, there are a number of listings for Carl G Anderson and Charles G Anderson in the Kansas City, MO, city directories with several different occupations but there is no way of telling if this is the same person. And C G Anderson hasn’t been found in any other city directory as photographer.

He has not turned up in any photography journals of that period, before or after his five years in the business. Very few other examples of his work have been found.

It is only speculation at this point but it looks as if those five years might have been C G Anderson’s only time in the photography business.

His life prior to his appearance in the 1896 Kansas City, MO, directory is a mystery too. No biographical information has been found.

G. W. Davis is mentioned often for the hiring of James Conway Farley, a prominent black photographer, at a time when that was unusual. He is also said to have fired other employees who objected. No biographical information has been found.
