were all photographers working mainly in Philadelphia, Altoona and Chambersburg, PA, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Studios were named Bishop, H. T. Bishop, and Bishop Bros.

The most consistent of these was Henry Theodore Bishop who remained in the photography business for many years.

News item shows H T Bishop opened a studio in Lansing, MN, in February of 1904

The obituary of the father, Henry Bishop lists his three sons and one daughter.

The Obituary of H T Bishop shows that he was working in Minneapolis, MN from about 1892 to 1907. He then moved to Austin, MN, and continued there until his death in 1917.

It appears there were as many as five other photographers named Bishop around the turn of the 19th century. Only one, Isaac R. Bishop actually worked in the Philadelphia area. Others were in Connecticut, Wisconsin, Massachusetts and Washington DC.

This Joseph E. Bishop was born Oct 8, 1853 in Massachusetts.

He started photographing in Washington DC in 1877, married Mary Cook in 1882, and was in that business until early 1907. He also worked for the US War Dept as a photographer, and returned to that employer after 1907.

He was located at 905 Pennsylvania Ave from 1890-1894, and for 2 years (ca 1896) was also working as "Bishop and Meyer." After 1894, he was located at (mostly) 1008 G St ne for many years. He also took some early photos of the contraptions of Emile Berliner, the inventor of the Gramophone.

If you double check the Wash DC City Directories, you will note that no one named James E. Bishop was ever situated there. Joseph would die March 2, 1929 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery (WDC). --Allen

The Kuebler Gallery was operated at stages with William J Kuebler and his two sons William J Kuebler, JR, and Louis Herman Kuebler. Louis H Kuebler seems to have been the last operator. He died in 1908.
No documentation has been found to show if the studio continued under other management after that.

William Kuebler SR partnered with William G Entreken to form the Entreken and Kuebler studio at 1204 Chestnut, in 1886. It apparently lasted only that year. The following year 1887, shows son William JR as photographer at 1204 Chestnut, along with William G Entreken.

The line of Kuebler, photographers, is a little difficult to follow after this. William Kuebler SR and William Kuebler JR are not always designated so. More, William JR also had a son and a grandson named William.

It’s a fair guess that William J Kuebler, JR, got into the brewery business about 1899 with Commonwealth Breweries and never entered the photography business again. He served on the board of banks as well as the brewery. It appears he moved to Allentown, PA. The brewery William J Kuebler died about 1913.

If that’s not the case, then the photographer William J Kuebler. JR. seems to disappear in 1900.

Albert C. Carpenter

This Carpenter is not the same as in
Bloomer with Carpenter. That Carpenter is probably Marion S Carpenter

Albert Carpenter was a difficult photographer to trace. He moved around a lot and used variations of his name. Also complicating research, there seems to be more than one person by exactly the same name, two of them with a wife of the same name. (See 1913)

Further, it didn’t help that his last name is also a common word. Searching newspapers brought up carpenter and builder want ads and carpenter union stories.

Albert Carpenter dies at age 79 in Meadow Park, WA

Albert C. Carpenter was a photographer most of his life but moved often and didn’t always admit he was a photographer. He was working in Kansas City, MO, from 1884 until 1891 when he moved to Springfield, MO, where he operated a studio briefly, only two or three months.

He then appears next in Tacoma, WA. He operates at various addresses in Tacoma from 1892 to 1909 and then turns to the art supply and picture frame business for the rest of his life.

The cabinet card here must have been done between 1886 and 1890 when he his studio was at 715 Main in Kansas City, MO.
