Bishop Brothers

Photographer: Bishop Bros.
Altoona, PA.
example from LOST GALLERY
Henry Bishop (1824-1893)and three sons,
William Nixon Bishop(1848-1921)
Henry Theodore Bishop (1852-1917)
James Eyster Bishop(1860-1913)
were all photographers working mainly in Philadelphia, Altoona and Chambersburg, PA, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Studios were named Bishop, H. T. Bishop, and Bishop Bros.

The most consistent of these was Henry Theodore Bishop who remained in the photography business for many years.

News item shows H T Bishop opened a studio in Lansing, MN, in February of 1904

The obituary of the father, Henry Bishop lists his three sons and one daughter.

The Obituary of H T Bishop shows that he was working in Minneapolis, MN from about 1892 to 1907. He then moved to Austin, MN, and continued there until his death in 1917.
It appears there were as many as five other photographers named Bishop around the turn of the 19th century. Only one, Isaac R. Bishop actually worked in the Philadelphia area. Others were in Connecticut, Wisconsin, Massachusetts and Washington DC.

From Comment section:
This Joseph E. Bishop was born Oct 8, 1853 in Massachusetts.

He started photographing in Washington DC in 1877, married Mary Cook in 1882, and was in that business until early 1907. He also worked for the US War Dept as a photographer, and returned to that employer after 1907.

He was located at 905 Pennsylvania Ave from 1890-1894, and for 2 years (ca 1896) was also working as "Bishop and Meyer." After 1894, he was located at (mostly) 1008 G St ne for many years. He also took some early photos of the contraptions of Emile Berliner, the inventor of the Gramophone.

If you double check the Wash DC City Directories, you will note that no one named James E. Bishop was ever situated there. Joseph would die March 2, 1929 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery (WDC). --Allen

Erikson

photographer: Erickson
East Rockford
example from LOST GALLERY
photographer: Erikson
Rockford, Illinois

Erikson
Rockford, Illinois
In searching for Erickson of East Rockford, IL, a 19th century photographer, an Erickson of Rockford, IL, a CONTEMPORARY photographer was found. This muddled searches somewhat.

In the decades of the cabinet card, there were a dozen or more photographers named Erickson.

According to the 1910 US census alone there were 6 photographers at that time named Erickson, in north eastern US:
Frank C Erickson, Peabody, MA
Charlie Erickson, Minneapolis, MN
Charles Erickson, Minneapolis, MN
Charles L Erickson, Chicago, IL
Charles J Erickson, Chicago, IL
Erick Erickson of Chicago, IL
And one in Delta, CO named Charles A Erickson.

The three most likely to be the Erickson who worked in Rockford, IL, were the photographers in Chicago: Charles J, Charles L and Erick. There were no records placing any of the three in Rockford, IL, at any time. But there are gaps in the Chicago and Rockford records that would allow any of the three to be located Rockford temporarily.

Charles L Erickson is most often listed as “Commercial Photographer” so it is possible that he never did any portrait work.

Charles J Erickson records are few.

The best candidate seems to be Erick Erickson. Erick appears steadily as a photographer in Chicago city directories except for a two year drop out in 1898 and 1899. Possibly he worked in Rockford, IL, at that time. There are no records to prove this.

But any of these three could have made the 70 or so mile trip over to Rockford, IL, to spend a few days or weeks or months in a rented studio, making cabinet card portraits. The available Rockford city directories never list an Erickson, photographer.

No conclusions based on the location of the photographer can be made to date the cabinet cards shown here. The style of the cards would suggest 1886 - 1895.

Again is it unknown at this time if this is the same photographer Erickson as the Charles Erickson of Dixon, IL, shown at the top.
