Union Gallery of Dallas, Texas

photographer: Union Gallery
1131 Elm Street, Dallas, TX
example from LOST GALLERY
Enhanced version

Dallas city directories 1875 through 1920 make no mention of a Union Gallery or any photo studio at 1131 Elm Street. It is possible the card was made as a novelty after 1920 but considering the costume of the subject, probably not.

The card itself is light weight, about 6 ply, with rounded corners, straight cut non-beveled edges.

Not the one you were looking for? Here's the photographer's INDEX by name. All the Cabinet Card photographers of the 19th century found in LOST GALLERY are listed there.

This is a work always in progress.

Additional information and New examples are always welcome. Any additional information will help narrow the time that these precious antiques were made.

All submissions should be free of glare and shadows.
Do not crop.
Leave a border around each card. The edges are sometimes an important clue to the age of the card.

Willard P Simpson, Simpson's Studio

photographer: Simpson
182 Main Street, Paterson, NJ
example from LOST GALLERY
(finished between 1880 and 1883)
reverse of card at left

Willard P Simpson was difficult to trace partly because he relocated at least three times, and, to complicate it further, there was at least three other photographers calling their business “Simpson’s Studio”. One of them was W P Simpson’s own son, Frank who ran a “Simpson’s Studio” In Fort Worth, TX, until his retirement in 1936.

Photographer W P Simpson appeared mostly in Boston, MA, Patterson, NJ, and then the Dallas, TX, area.

Very few mentions of W P Simpson were found in newspapers. There were no advertisements that could positively be attributed to this Simpson.

This timeline was assembled only following the lead of official documents, such as the US census and city directories. So there are some serious gaps. There are periods where Simpson just disappears for a while.

Clifton Church

Clifton Church
Dallas, Texas

Clifton Church
(17 Ma7 1855 - 6 Apr 1943)

Clifton Church was born in Massachusetts, worked in Dallas, TX, for 22 years and then returned to Massachusetts to retire. One could almost believe it was two different people. His date and place of birth and wife’s name and age are the same in all records however. And the Superman/Clark Kent rule comes into play. When he’s in one state, he’s not in the other.

What drew him to Dallas, TX, from Massachusetts is unknown.
