Not much was found about the life of Edward W Mathews. The 1880 US census lists Mathews as a photographer at age 14.
It appears he had only one location most of the time, at 420 ½ North Main from about 1892 to 1905.
As did many photographers of the era, Mathews apparently worked mainly in one town, with "branch" studios in neighboring towns operated by "partners".
Middletown, OH, is just 54 miles from Piqua, OH.

"E. W. Matthews" (with two t's) seems to have collaborated in these years with he older Elisha Lawson. The 1891 directory of Middletown, OH, lists a photography outfit of "Lawson and Matthews" at 27 Main St., Middletown, OH. Lawson lived at that address, although there is no address in town for Mathews or Matthews. However, there is cabinet photo of Samuel R. Robinson photographed by "E W Mathews," supposely at Piqua, and photos of his wife and daughter, Arminda Jane (Arthur) Robinson and their daughter Nina or Lina, both attributed to "E Lawson" at Middletown, and they appear to have been photographed in the same studio, with the same props. Maybe 1890s.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the information! I am looking into Lawson and the connection to Mathews.
