Crossman and Hart

photographer: Crossman and Hart
Anthony, Kansas

This cabinet card contributed by the family of William Birdsall Bullers and Great Granddaughters of John Lewis “Pop” Bullers.

Stringing together the documents of the life of Cina Crossman was difficult. The following is a trail of her photographic career pieced together almost entirely from newspaper items. Women often change their names, mostly legally through marriage but sometimes through whimsy or vanity. They also fib about their age often. Add to that the spelling interpretations of the record keepers and census takers. Thus records of their lives are often scrambled and disconnected. Because of these sometimes misleading records, the following timeline has been developed in detail to insure continuity.

From this point the timeline of the life of Cina L Crossman becomes somewhat speculative. Her birth date, 1855 and place, Keokuk, IA, remain fairly constant but her name: CIna, and location: Kansas, shift. In 1900 it appears she marries John D Bridgman and is now called Lucina C Bridgman. (The “C” presumably is for Crossman, her maiden name, an adjustment that was somewhat traditional at that time)

Will (Wille, Willie) Hart appears to have been rather transient. Newspaper ads and items describe him as photographer in Anthony, KS, from July of 1885 to April of 1889. (Partnered with Crossman for a few months in 1885, January through August.) Then the newspaper ads indicate that MRS Will Hart takes over the gallery early in 1885 and hires Harry L Soule of Harper, KS, to operate it. Mildred Hart divorces Will Hart in October of that year. Will Hart leaves Anthony, KS and operates galleries in Coldwater, KS, and then Pratt, KS. After that, nothing has been found so far.
