John Wesley Pickard spent most of his photograph career in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, changing addresses frequently. Early on however, from 1890 to 1893, records show he worked in (and apparently around) Mobile, AL.

Pickard’s studio at 63 North Eighth in Philadelphia, was taken over in 1902 by Charles S Bell, who ran he location through that year under the name Bell Photo Studio. The location was then taken over by E F Holt who ran it until 1906 using the name "Holt’s Bell Studio." Finally in December of 1906, the Bell studio went up for sale or rent, presumably unoccupied. Ads ran until December of 1907 with apparently no takers.

There was a photograph studio in various incarnations at 63 North Eighth from about May of 1899 to about November of 1907. Attempts to rent or sell the studio space in 1907 apparently went without result for most of that year.

It's just a guess but apparently the building at 63 North Eighth was owned by the Commonwealth Insurance and Trust Co and managed by the dentist, Dr Jones, one of the other tenants.

Today the location is a huge multi-level parking garage.

At the right is an example of a folder mount from the Bell Studio. Note the embossed logo in the lower right.

This was probably made between 1902 and 1906 but most likely in 1902 when C S Bell was still operating at 63 North Eighth.

But, another scenario might be that when C S Bell moved out, he left all his pre-printed stock of folders and cards and Holt simply retained he name for economical reason.

(Still unknown when Pickard was in Phoenixville, PA. Phoenixville is only 26 Miles from Philadelphia, so it was likely just a temporary studio perhaps used only one or two days a week.)

John Howard Dubbs

photographer: Dubbs

John Howard Dubbs
(1859 - 1930)

It might seem that this would be a difficult photographer to trace since all the information available was a last name, Dubbs. However there is an adequate amount of information about John Howard Dubbs available and it appears there was only one photographer by that name in the cabinet card era.

The documents show John Howard Dubbs as photographer from 1887 to 1910, but into other occupations from 1914 through 1918. Then from 1920 to 1930 he is back working as a photographer. Cabinet cards were losing popularity after 1910 so it’s a good guess that the card at the top was finished during the earlier work in photography. Considering the rounded corner cut of the card itself, and the imprinted decorative design, this card was probably made around 1900 in Ohio.

The only records found showing that J H Dubbs was living in East Tawas, MI, were from 1888 and 1889. There are some gaps in his timeline but one can assume that this card might have been made during that period.

No information has been found on photographer Godfrey as yet.

William E Kingsbury

Photographer: William E. Kingsbury
Sturgeon MO

To date, very few people by the name of W E Kingsbury have been found. There was for example, a minister in Pennsylvania, a salesman in Wisconsin and a candy manufacturer in Texas.

There was however, a William E Kingsbury living in Sturgeon, Boone County, MO, between 1882 and 1891. There was no city directory in that town and no other documents identify him as photographer but logic dictates this must be the one.

The 1880 US census shows him still living with his parents Thomas and Elizabeth, in Sherman, DeKalb, MO.

The 1900 US census shows him as a farmer with wife Marilda, daughter Laura and son Walter in Bourbon, Boone County, MO.

So what places him in Sturgeon, MO?

Both daughter Laura and son Walter were born in Sturgeon, MO, in 1882 and 1891 respectively.

His father Thomas (1819-1900) and second daughter Eunice (1885-1889) are both buried in Sturgeon, MO.

Sherman, Bourbon and Sturgeon, are all within 100 miles of each other in eastern Missouri.

So although no records have surfaced to date, that identify William Kingsbury as a photographer, he was in Sturgeon, MO, between the years of 1882 and 1891. By June 2, 1900, the US census shows he was living in Bourbon, MO, as a farmer.

Photographer: E. K. Porter
Sterling, Kans

Ellis Kepler Porter (1860 - 1936) was a photographer in Sterling, KS from about 1889 through 1930 based on the few documents that were found. There was no city directory for that town in those days, so more detailed information of his location is unavailable.

His brother Willard Duncan Porter (1854 - 1924) also worked as a photographer. According to a 1904 Kansas Gazetteer, Ellis and Willard were working together in Sterling, KS. No other documents are available to show how long this lasted.

Topeka Daily Capital - 11 Oct 1914

It would be a good guess that the photographs here were done early in his career as photographer, when cabinet cards were still popular.
