Of course Ben Beckmann may not be the photographer at all. The hand lettered calligraphy at the bottom of this card may have been added years later after the card was finished. The only clue is that the card was found in McKinney, Texas.

As of 29 Nov 2017 nothing has been found on Beckmann as photographer.

W.J. Byrne and Co. was a commercial photographic firm based in Richmond, England. In 1883 the firm was located at 1 Clarence Terrace in 1883. The company was in the same building in 1900. However, the street had been renamed and the premises was known as 19 Hill Street (Library and Information Services, London Borough of Richmond upon Thames 2004).

William Oscar Cromwell
(1838 - 1929)

W Oscar Cromwell moved with his parents and family to northern California during the gold rush of 1849. He worked as a miner and general laborer before turning to photography about 1879. He continued on with photography in Shasta County and Tehama County, CA, until his death in 1929, although at 81 and 84 he considered himself as “retired”.

A dam was built on the Sacramento River between 1935 and 1945. The resulting lake inundated the mining town of Kennett, CA, and several others.

Since O Cromwell worked in the area of Shasta and Tehama counties, in the northern edge of California he could have set up shop in the town of Lakeview, Oregon at any time. No documents have been found to show exactly when, but it was probably between 1880 and 1910.

Lakeview, OR, is about 150 miles from where Kennett, CA was.

Georgetown, CA, Unknown newspaper and date

Shows that Cromwell did travel and had a tent studio. Georgetown, CA, is about 150 miles from where Kennett, CA, was.

The cabinet card here does not include first names so searching for the two by name in California was almost fruitless.

A search based on the address, 811 Market St. did however, turn up this 1881 item in the San Francisco Chronicle. It shows both first names and initials and places a date for the beginning and end of their partnership. This one newspaper clipping actually dates the card here pretty well.

San Francisco Chronicle - 29 Jul 1881

Searches using their name and initial were better but still cluttered with similar names. In one year, there were seven Charles Johnsons that were seamen, let alone several in other professions including prize fighter.

Other small ads found, show that 811 Market was a photography studio called Aldine Gallery operated by B. F. Howland clear up until November of 1880 when it was apparently burned in a fire.

This cabinet card then had to have been finished between December 1880 and July of 1881.

Timelines of the two photographers were assembled anyway in case there are other cabinet cards around done by the individual photographers.

(Note: one commenter (see below) says that George Henry Knight was born 23 Jun 1942 in London, England.

There were at least, five photographers named Frisbie in the cabinet card era.

EE Frisbie worked around 1880 in Hartford, CT

John Meigs Frisbie worked many years in Sandusky, OH. Nothing was found that would connect him with Ottawa, IL, which is 300 miles from Sandusky, OH.

James B Frisbie was centered in Oneida, NY

William D Frisbie was working in New London, CT, in 1882

Update - 20 Nov 2022:
No new examples have been found on Downs and Frisbie either together or separately. No newspaper mentions or new examples have been found.

This comment came through on the Knight and Johnson page:
Unknown: "O.B. Frisbie, the photographer from Ottawa, Illinois, is Orton Benoni Frisbie, my second great grandfather."

O B Frisbie was found on two cabinet card examples. On the featured one on this page from LOST GALLERY, the photographer is identified as Downs and Frisbie of Ottawa, IL. On the example at the right, found at the
Flickr site of mj aux , the photographer is listed as O B Frisbie of Ottawa, IL. So it appears that O B Frisbie was operating the “Bee Hive” studio in Ottawa, IL. At one time he was partnered with a photographer named “Downs”. Nothing further has been found on either of these photographers.

The cabinet card style in both examples looks like 1885 to 1895. But because photographers often used up older card stock, that date is unreliable.

There are many mentions of "Bee Hive Gallery" in newspapers of the time, mostly Kansas and Indiana. None were found in Illinois.

To date, no documents have been found to confirm that Orton Benoni Frisbie was a photographer. He can be documented as a farmer, a miller, a real estate agent and an insurance salesman.
it's a good bet that Frisbie was not in the photography business very long.
